"GSLIS After Dark" Attracts Alumni for Evening of Recognition, Connection

(May 9, 2012) -- Nearly 100 GSLIS alumni gathered on the Simmons campus April 6 for "GSLIS After Dark: An Evening of Recognition and Connection." The event in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center included a wine and cheese reception followed by a dinner program that featured remarks by Dean Michèle V. Cloonan, the presentation of the 2012 GSLIS Alumni Achievement Award, and the GSLIS Alumni Board business meeting.

In her last appearance at an alumni event as dean, Michèle Cloonan focused her remarks on "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: Reflections on GSLIS." She shared finds from the Simmons archives, reflected on her decade as dean. She also talked about GSLIS West, and shared her thoughts on online education and other new directions for the school.

GSLIS Alumni Board President Carl A. Antonucci, Jr. '93LS led the business meeting, and the evening concluded with the presentation of the 2012 GSLIS Alumni Achievement Award to Jo A. Cates '84LS, associate vice president for academic research and dean of the library at Columbia College, Chicago. The college is internationally renowned as a pioneer in arts and media education. Jo heads the Office of Academic Research and is responsible for the Library and Archives/Digital Collections as well as research and outreach centers, including the Museum of Contempo¬rary Photography, the Center for Community Arts Partnerships, the Center for Black Music Research, and numerous others.
